http://www.maxracesoftware.com/Vortec_Chamber.jpg

a couple of pics of cast-iron Vortec heads in various porting stages

those heads had 2.055/1.600 valves

in 3200 Pontiac Ventura , 4.56 gears,
3500 to 4500 stall converters (he tried both)
9 inch x 29.5 Slicks
750 cfm carbs
either solid lifter cam or small roller cam (he tried both ways)

car runs 11.03 122+ mph to 11.20's depending upon
which converter / cam he runs.

Vortecs can be great Cyl Heads , with a little work
and even better with a lot of work.

i've been able to install 2.080/1.600 valve combo in Vortec , but due to casting core shift problems with water jacket ,
99 percent of Vortecs can only use 2.055/1.600 effectively

Have you seen/tried the aftermarket Vortecs by ProTopline? I sold a pair last week, and side by side to GM's, they were ~8 lbs heavier, and all the ports/runners were tremendously larger, if I remember right by .100-.200. I would doubt that they have the water jacket problem that the factory 906's do. Hanz

======================================

yeah. GM likes to sell you waterjacket space Smile

seriously, GM's Cylinder Heads offer very good performance potential
and give you just enough metal most of times to port/shape !

you ever picked up a GM #049 alum SBC head (1st design) ??
probably one the lightest SBC alum heads ever made Smile

i ran 7.72 ET in my old Dragster with these #049 heads a long time ago
1430 Lbs 331 cid with (2) 660s (850 baseplates) carbs on Edelbrock Pro Ram, 5.43 rear gears, 2 Speed Powerglide, 12x33 GoodYears on 10" rims

i'm sure ProTopLine Vortecs are much better than GM and offer more potential .... but i've never ported a pair of their Vortec heads yet

I wouldn't be as concerned with the ET as I would be with the MPH. I absolutely hate the 1850 Holley's. They would take performance away from any engine. The 3310 780/750 CFM carb is a much better unit.
I've put that cam in a few street 406's and they have performed very well.

You've got to fix that tire shake before you run the car again cause that's how stuff breaks.
