Yep - 4 strokes have come a looonnngg way with power output. I had an 87 XR600 and a 03 YZ250F (290 big bore kit) that made the same rear wheel on the dyno. Yours is most likely in the low to mid 50 hp range at the wheel. If there is some open area to ride a 450 is an absolute blast - in tight woods I think they're absolutely miserable. Hope he has fun! He loves it and says it puts out mid to upper 50's for power to the rear wheel but I'm sure that's a 16 year old kid bragging. All I know is if you're not paying attention it will put you on your ass in any gear.

Or into a tree.

May be safe enough if your last name isn't Kennedy, but I wouldn't take that risk myself. I'm too old, and defintely too fat!

Funny I just got a 2001 works performance cr 250 that has had a lot of work done, and is set up for a big rider. It was my brothers bike that he hardly rode, and looks, and runs like new. First kick machine, and very fast. I used to ride a open class 2 stroke way back in the day, and this thing is almost as fast, and has a wide power band, and then just explodes with power out of the corners. Hours of fun. Your son must be a good rider to have a 450 at age 16. My sons are 17, and 18. They learned on a xr 80, and I am nervous to let them just jump on this 250.
