I installed a set of American Racing Headers 1-7/8" primaries with HVMC and catted Y-pipe on my 02 Z28. After putting them on the drivers side primary tubes is hitting the K-member. I spoke with the guys at ARH and they are saying to loosen up the headers then try to wiggle them around to make as much clearance as I can. I'll try to adjust them but doubt this will make enough clearance.

I ordered up some new motor and trans mounts since my old ones have 100K+ miles on them. Hopefully between the two this will give me enough clearance.

On a side note the car sounds great and the workmanship on the headers looks great. Hopefully they'll perform as good as they look.

I had some issues with the hooker supercomps like that. I used a bat inside the collector and pulled on the bat to get the clearance I needed from the cross member. It wasn't too bad. You could try that if you know that things are lined up at the head and tight.

I've NEVER had a set of headers fit for me without modifying something. Best set were Hedmans on a 4 x 4 truck. I had to hook a ratchet strap to a collector to pull it off the frame. Mustangs have been by far the worst for me with full length headers. Hopefully you won't have to get out the "massaging tool". Clay

The bat works and gives you enough leverage to adjust it without denting it.

I finally had a chance to closely look at this last night. Passenger side header fits great. Drivers side has maybe 1/8" clearance (more like 1/16") between the primary tubes and the K-member body mount.

For now I'm going to try and see what I gain with loosening the header bolts and re-adjusting the header. Wish me luck.

I tried what ARH tech support said. I loosened up all the header bolts, y-pipe bolts, and put a 1/4" piece of wood between the header and contact point on the K-member, and then re-tightened everything up. I gained a smidge more clearance, now I have about an 1/8". It's still not enough but I needed the car and it was enough to be able to drive it.

I haven't installed poly motor mounts yet and hoping that will get me the rest of the way there.

On a side note car definitely pulls much better. It's hard to tell the difference since I haven't driven the car in awhile and I changed the rear end from 3.42 back to 2.73. Even with the gear change the car feels faster. I need to do some data logging and tuning to see for sure, maybe even a trip to the dyno.

Have you tried the washers under the motor mount trick to sandwich the washers between the block and the mount. That works with sticking BBC into Camaro and N ova's with rear steer gear box interference.

Holy crap Dave,
You bought back a 30 year old fix I had to do when I put the BBC in my Nova. I had to make 1/2" spacers and grind the slot in the mount so the bolt would go through.

I put in a poly transmission mount a few days ago. On the plus side the header doesn't rub any more. The negative side the car has a bunch of vibrations now. So much so I think the transmission has issues I wasn't aware of before. If you drive in 1st the vibration is horrible, 2nd a little better, 3rd almost tolerable, 4th is acceptable.

I'm going to pull the poly mount out and swap in a new factory rubber mount and see how that works.

Put it up and look under it while going through the gears. You really think the transmission is shaking internally? Maybe u-joint in the front?
