Ok, i've been browsing ignition stuff for my 327 project. Its gonna be carburated and dropped in an 89 camaro. I don't know anything about ignitions and i can't find any good articles to read about it. Its not gonna be a crazy motor, but I want it to do as well as it can. What do I need to get? Can I get a self contained HEI distributor that will get the job done, that has the coil and everything integrated so its pretty much plug and play? Please excuse my ignorance on this subject, i'm trying to learn. What do you guys suggest?

I think a standard HEI should do the trick. If you want to upgrade down the road you have plenty of options with spark boxes and coils.

I would recommend either an MSD or an Accel HEI distributor.

I would absolutely try to use the HEI in your situation - they're just too easy if you have the room. We have used the MSD Streetfire distributors with no problems so far. If you search around there seem to be some problems with about every aftermarket distrubutor due to parts being made overseas - nobody's perfect. Your could get a used factory unit and then put in an aftermarket module. I have used this module in an Accel HEI distrubutor (it was on sale at the time) and it's a pretty slick unit with the rev limiter built in.

If you plan on using nitrous later there are other options but just to run N/A, the HEI's are tough to beat. Clay

definitely go with the HEI. if, later on, you decide to go with some type of ignition box, retard controls or whatever, you can gut the HEI and just run the magnetic pickup to an MSD. there are even caps available to remotely mount the coil.
