My trip to New England Dragway didn't end as I hoped it would. Again I failed in an attempt to run a 10 anything.
On a brighter note I got to spend the morning with Paul. He raced his daily driver with 4.5 gazillion miles on it and ran a personal best. Bought the car needing some head work. He did that and added some improvements. All he needs is a posi unit and he'll be flirting with the 14's. This on a vehicle that gets over 30 MPG.
We raced a few times side by side. Pitting with him was a pleasure.

My best today was an 11.19 with 60 foot times about the same. Next will be a change in gear. The Hoosiers drove fine on the trip too and from the track.

I broke an upper rear shock mount. I thought 1.75 inches would be enough separation for body lift but I guess not. Maybe that's part of my problem getting hooked up.
We, rather my son, will make up another mounting allowing more extension and see how that plays out. I think we'll either put in 4.10's or 4.30's.

My son took some video and if Paul doesn't pay me enough money I'll post them. Smile

Well I'm sorry you didn't achieve your goal but glad you had a good time. I went to the track last night and although I couldn't make mine hook, several friends from work came, some with their cars and it was a really fun night. I was hoping both of my friends with Geo Metro's would show up - that would have been a hoot. Bring on the video! Clay

That was a great time no doubt. Round robin no waiting pass after pass.

It was kind of funny me at half track at 11.13 seconds on one of my runs with Gene at him at the end running 11.22. Shocked

I would like the videos.

We can make the ransom $$ exchange in a public place somewhere. Wink

I did miss a shift on my first pass. Uggh!

With a decent burnout hitting the rev limiter at 7000 I was able to get the car down to a 2.2 60 ft time and 15.6 @ 87mph. Not all that bad for a front wheel drive daily driver. It needs the diff to get better off the line. Took me some 10 runs to figure out the best way to launch it with limited traction. Still a lot of fun anyway.

How do you handle torque steer?

My wife's car is a front wheel drive and it wants to yank the wheel out of my hand when I get on it hard enough to spin a tire.

I did not experience that with this car for some reason it just went straight with no noticeable torque steer. The only thing it would do if I was hard on it off the line was hop pretty bad as it was trying to hook.
Gene,

Well, I've got the 4.33 ring & pinion in the Nova. My son re-fabricated the upper shock mounts. Calvert Racing suggested that we set it up with 1.5 to 2 inches of shock mast showing when the car is at rest. That added about 1.25 inches more travel than what we had.
Unless something comes up I'm going up to New England Dragway Saturday. Unfortunately I think we've seen the last of the outstanding air quality.

Man that thing is going to launch hard now.
I might be able to head up again possibly.
I'll see if a buddy of mine is game. He wants to bring his BMW up there.
Paul

What are you going to do about the oil temp gauge?

I repositioned the wire going to the sender. It was hitting hard against the Tranny cooling lines. Wouldn't think that that would do it but it hasn't acted up since I moved it. I only had the car out briefly tonight, about 5-6 miles to make sure everything worked. There's a car show I'm going to tomorrow night that's about 15 miles away. I'll monitor the temp during the trip.

Wouldn't it be great for us if the turnout was light again?

Yes it would be good. My friend with the BMW is backing out due to an early 10am wedding he has to attend. I'm not sure I'll be making the trip this Sat. as much as I would like to.

Well Saturday didn't see the Nova get into the 10's. Can't remember when I had a drag racing day that turned out as different as what I had in mind.

After repairing the shock location for more extension and changing from 3.73 to 4.33 gears I visioned vastly improved 60 foot and 1/8th mile ET's. The weather was quite good early so I'm thinking 60 foot times around 1.50. The best I got was a couple of 1.58's and ET & MPH was way off.

On my 5th pass I got a vibration around 1000 feet and almost lifted. On the return road the rear end was quite loud.

We pulled the cover & Found metal so I had AAA tow it to Tewksbury.

I thought it might be a failed pinion bearing, but when I pulled it apart the bearings were fine. What I did find was considerable wear on the ring gear. we set it up with .008 all round. The pattern looked good. They are Pro gears so I expected some noise. I had the gears in the Nova before and they were noisy.

Next comes a set of street 4.10's. There is a Nostalga Event next Sunday that I hope to make.

Wow Gene! That is a ball breaker. I was wondering what happened. You'll get it with the 4.10s.

Paul,
I'm going to take a compression check & a leak down test. The engine really seemed down in power.
