1971 Ford Mustang

This is my Dads 68 Falcon that is a big work in progress. We bought the car with a stock 78 302, Victor Jr intake, Holley 650dp, 1 5/8's LT headers, 2" dual full exhaust, 3speed standard out of a truck, 8" with 4.11's and a mini spool. On the way home the car wouldn't go over 30mph befroe it would starve and fall on its face. So the first order of business was to fix that, which ended up being a plugged fuel line. Then the carb started flooding so I cleaned out the bowls and put in new needle and seats and a fuel filter. Problem fixed and it ran a whole lot better. We then cut out the exhaust and put 2 1/2" single chamber Flow masters on a 16" piece of pipe blted to the colletor with dumps. Ran better but I broke 2nd gear banging 2nd having alittle fun LOL.

First wave of upgrades Msd coil, distributer locked out, Monster tach and Mallory ignition box we had laying around. Then a we swapped in a C-4 with a transbrake and a 3500 stall. In this form we took it to the track a few weekends it ran a best of 14.57@92 with a 1.85 60ft at 3110lb race weight with 26 x 8 1/2" slicks. Not bad considering the horrible hp that year 302 made and the condition it was in. This was not going to do for the season so some more power was needed.

Second wave and this is how it currently sits
80k mile stock 94 explorer short block pistons in the hole .012
Gt-40 heads ported by me stock valves, heads shaved .035, trick flow spring kit
.041 head gasket
E-303 cam 1.7 pedalstal mount proform rockers
stock out of box Victor Jr
1 5/8 longtubes
Holley mechanical fuel pump 3/8 stainless fuel line to the tank
Spent $800 buying and putting this GT-40 motor together

We also decided to upgrade the suspension and brakes at this point
Cal tracs bars
Cal tracs single mono leaf rear springs
Cal tracs adj rear shocks
Moroso trick springs
Competition engineering 90/10's in the front
Front Disc brake swap with slotted rotors, new master cyl, porportioning valve and new lines
Stock drums on the rear
Ford 8" 4.11
C-4 2500 stall transbrake
26x 11.5 M/T ET streets

We weren't shooting for big numbers here, just a good bracket motor while we work on the Boss 302. We were hoping for 12's out of this Gt-40 setup. But to date the best pass has been 13.00@106mph the converter is way to tight and kills the motor off the launch and at shifts it pulls it down also. it could use some more gear also.

Still good results considering that is basically a factory cam that is emissions legal. I hope I'm right on that and don't wind up looking like a dummy. Clay

Yeah it is an emissons legal cam. I put a 5500 stall in the car and it didn't like it, it's to loose. I kinda knew it would be. I need to find a 4500stall and I will get the 12.50's I was looking for.

Well the Dirty Bird won its first race this weekend and ran its best time 12.69@105 with a 1.71 60 ft. Thinking of putting a 4.56 gear in it and a spool. I just installed an 8.8 in it last week since we broke the 8"s axel again at the previous race. The 8.8 is 28 spline but with c-clip elims, 4.10 and a trac loc. So we will upgrade after awhile but it definatley worked real well this weekend and it also gave me a chance to correct the pinion angle when I was setting it up in the car. We also had the TCI converter restalled by FTI to 4500 and the car seemed to like it. Heres a pic in the winners circle and most of the PONYEXPRESS racing crew man was it hot LOL. I also attached a pick from the NHRA unleashed event.

Nice looks like it is set up well. I am surprised you are breaking axles with a 12 second ride. Are the 8.8 axles that weak?

Factory stock is 28 spline which is the same as a 10 bolt Chevy.

The 8.8's are actually pretty strong. We were breaking the old ford 8" axles that originally came in the old cars. The 8" is simalar in design to the Ford 9" but the carriers and axles are weak in comparison. I went with the 8.8 because we had one laying around that we took out of a Fox body mustang it was only a 1/4 longer so need to shorten it pretty much an easy swap if you know what I mean.

A few updates on the Dirty Bird. We installed a Crane HI6 DSR and coil, aluminium 3 core radiator, prostar skinnies, and a fiberglass cowl hood and 456 gears. The new best is 12.48@103 with a 1.64 60ft it ran 7.90 to the 1/8 on this pass all new bests for the bird. We also picked up 31 spline axles, spool for the rear and the matching rear prostar rims but I haven't installed them yet. I attached some pics of the car with the paint scheme we are thinking of painting it tell me what you guys think don't beat me up to bad we wanted it to stand out in a crowd LOL. We will be painting it ourselves and are in the process of doing the body work now.

From what I've seen in setting both up - the 12 bolt and the 8.8's are VERY similar. In fact they share the same pinion bearings. Don't know about carrier bearings though. Don't know about axles as the only one's I have messe with were Ford Motorsport setups that had I'm assuming larger axles - they were definately beefier than the factory 12 bolt ones. Glad to see you back around - seems like everyone has been sorta scarce lately - me included. On the color - yeah - that would definatley stand out......... I really hate to say this but it reminds me of the sublime green that well - um - you know who made. One paint job I thought was really cool was off of overhaulin. I can't remember the car but they put a blue color on and a very flat clear coat. It looked like a frosted mug for lack of a better description - pretty cool. Whatever you do - put some pics up. Later, Clay

Honestly with a falcon like that you will not have any problems sticking out. There just aren't that many out there at the track at least from what I have seen. I'd probably just change the lime green to a red.

I check here every day at least a couple times it has been quiet. I'll be posting some more on my header fab. I'm finding out that it is a bit more than slipping the tubes together and welding it up. There are quite a few changes needed due to the limitation of the bending machine that Stahl makes the kits with. Nice still none the less.

I drove the Dirty Bird in the Pony Wars this weekend and won my class the car worked great and my lights were killer all day, we had a blast 2 of our other cars placed 1st and 2nd in the 12.50 and faster class. It was a good showing for us.
