|
|
I started building a 406 sbc back in 2000 , my boss had a set of new "claimer" pistons he said I could have . I looked on the box and it said 10.0 comp 1/16 ring , 723g with pin- good to 400 hp and 6800 rpm . So I had my friend at our local machine shop bore it .030 and we went through hundreds of 5.7 rods picking out the perfect set , balanced the hole thing and I put it away until my motor blew or I got the rest of the parts I wanted together. Well the motor won't die "I've really been trying the valves just keep floating DAMMIT !!! " but last summer I got a steal on a set of ie 200 72cc head for 500.00 nib and couldn't pass them up . So I got the mating kool can intake -123.00 powder coated never fired e- bay. So now I'm ready to finish it but I'm having secent thoughts about those free pistons what do you gies think? _________________ You only die once drive it like you stole it!!! |

| Don't know much about them. Are they Cast, Forged, or are they Hypereutectic pistons? Do they have a floating pin or a pressed pin. What is the compression height? Do the oil rings require a heavier reinforcing piece to jump the gap caused by a pin encroaching into the ring lands? |

| Measure the pin distance to top and to side to see if they are all over the board as a set I did 4 years ago. I had .020 to .005" difference in pin location. A set of calipers will work for the rough measurement. |

They are all .020 in the hole , the ring lands look good with Plenty of aluminum above & below the rings . There are two steel reinforcements in the pin bosses. I will only be spinning it 5500 with my smallish xe 274 h cam . O and they are cast. Part #1266-p this sounds like an old badger number to me. Yep cast. I can't tell you how many cast pistons I spun 7000+ and lived.
Use a .020 gasket and run it. |

Well I think the pin is around 250 grams, so the piston should be around 500. What does a stock 400 piston weigh _________________ You only die once drive it like you stole it!!! |

My 4.160 bore 400 pistons weigh in with the pin at 641g so I guess 723 is not that far out weight wise.
Definitely go with good rods/rod bolts. _________________ 2001 Focus 2.0 Zetec

Ya I could shave off 50 grams with a good light weight pin but the pistons were free and so was the balancing I'm also running a 6000 limiter. Hopefully I won't find the weak link _________________ You only die once drive it like you stole it!!! |
