I have a Holley 4160 1850-2 that I am rebuilding. I got a Holley trick kit at autozone for the rebuild. The kit came with new needle and seat assemblies that look quite a bit different than mine. The original has a nut with a screw in the middle. You loosen the nut and take it off, and the screw is actually the end of the needle and seat, and you back the whole thing out. The new needle and seat has an open end instead of a screw end, and is a little shorter than the original. Can I use this new one, and just get a solid nut to seal off the float bowl? Or just reuse the original. I wish my dad was here...

the rebuild kits rarely come with the correct needle and seat. even if it fits its usually too small. i always end up buying them separate. if someone has a kit part number that actually has useable needle/seats for something with a little more HP than grandmas grocery getter, i would like to know.

You need a Holley part number 37-1542 Renew kit available for about $25.

I use the 0.139" needle and seat designed for alcohol use, and run less pressure (5 psi instead of 7 psi at the inlet) because there is more area for the float to seal up and I don't want excessive pressure blowing it off. The increased area allows more fuel in at a faster rate than the smaller hole at higher pressure. (According to Bernoulli's equation for steady state fluid flow anyway)

the "umbrella" part goes toward the outside of the bowl under the accel pump lever. this is your check valve to keep the accel pump from pushing the fuel back into the bowl.

I have the little ball with the bar over top of it instead of the umbrella. I definitely removed an umbrella from the carb when I tore it down. Where else could this thing go? I've been all over town asking people.

If this is it. It belongs inside the bowl above the accelerator pump.

That is it. I swear to god I pulled an old one out of the carb somewhere. I still have it, as well as the new one. Could there be an alternate location? Once again, this is an old carb I believe, and it has the check ball in the float tank under the accelerator pump diaphram and spring. Maybe someone rebuilt this thing a long time ago and just stuck the umbrella in some random place. I think that is unlikely, where the hell does this thing belong. I remember pulling it out with a pair of needle nose pliers.

no its not a double pumper. It has a tube that runs to the other float bowl. I guess i'll take your word for it. The only way is someone stuck it in some random hole. I cant believe that. I can't figure out where it came from. There is no way it goes in one of the metering blocks or on the main body of the carb or something? This is baffleing.
