Pump gas 404 cam

I've got a 1965 396+.040 with mostly stock 325hp internals. It has 10.25 comp and a (rv,204-214@.050&476-501) . My dcr is to high and it pings with 34* total timing running 92 pump gas. My dcr calculator says I need 70*-76* ivc to get my dcr I need for pump gas. It has all forged rotating assy cleaned up 97cc heads with hard seats.& ss valves , a rpm air gap&1 7/8 long tube headers , erson full roller rockers. I don't mind spinning it 6500 but it falls on it's face @ 4300 rpm . It's in a big 73 swb 4+4 so I don't want to lose to mutch low end but I would like to soften it up a bit ( it brakes a lot of drive train parts ) what grind do u think would work? owe I have a 2500 stall th400 , 205 with 3.73s& lockers.

I definately think you're short on duration. You've got some pretty good parts for a good overall package and I think you could go with something in the 230* duration at 0.050" with a 110* seperation. Howards has one (part #120051-10) with 230* in. and ex. with 0.514" lift with the factory 1.7 ratio. Competiton Cams has similar spec'd cams so just pick which manufacturer you like. Clay

Well I ordered a xm-11-236-4 , my dcr will be just over 8.0 but it's got 112 lsa I wanted 110 but $100.00 for the kit I'll run it . Now I'm looking for a good deal on some 911 springs. Wink

It'll sound good, and run fairly well from 2500 on up, the problem wasn't your cam. It was your compression. A bit steep for an iron headed BBC in a heavy 4x4. A small toque camshaft with that high of compression will play havoc with the dynamic compression. Which isn't particularly the "end all be all", but it's a good benchmark. You'll like the 112 lsa better than the 110, as it'll kill a little overlap period and restore a little of the bottom end you're going to lose by stepping the cam up. Advance it a degree or two beyond what they call for (108?), and that'll help as well. Just be sure to check the p/v clearance. If it's mainly a street truck, and you don't do much trail riding or pulling, you'll be ok with it. Preferably, I'd have gone a step lower on the cam, kept it on the same 112 your new one is on, and put thicker head gaskets on it to kill the compression a little. But you'll be ok with the one you chose. Enjoy it, don't sweat it.

It's a 4+4 used for a little of everything towing,mud racing ,sand dunes, and supprizing a lot of new trucks&cars with my ugly old truck . LOL
