My buddy has an 86' F-350 4x4 with a 460 in it. I know you guys aren't into the big trucks but can you guys help us out? We want to know what is the comp, carb size, bore, stroke, cam specs, etc. Pretty much we want to know what we have.
We would like to make 400 HP with a lot of torque, what would you guys recommend we do? Were on a budget so motor swaps are out of the question. What we want to know is what is the best we can do with the stock heads and bottom end (what cam, intake, header, carb to run) Is there anything we should know about these motors, I'm familiar with the BBC but not so much the Ford.

Horsepower on PowerBlock TV just built up a budget stone stock '385' 460 (called that because that is the stroke of the motor 3.85"). Following week they threw the parts book at it and nearly doubled the horsepower.

Boss 429 heads are not a bolt on and require machine work to change the oiling in the block to match the 429 heads (which have four oil supply points instead of two). They are cool heads though that you can loose a tennis ball down one of the ports.
Ford 460
Produced from 1968 to 1996.
Available in Ford, Mercury and Lincoln.
Bore 4.36
Same as 429, but with longer stroke. (3.85 inch)
During its earlier years, pre 1973, horsepower was rated at 365. After 1972 horsepower ranged from 208 to 275.
Intake/exhaust valves are 2.08/1.66
Intake/exhaust valves for the Police Interceptor 460 heads (from 1973-'74) measure 2.19/1.66
A car mag article on hoe to bolt on parts to get 775 horse out of a stock block:
