Anyone notice that with all of the V-8 trucks being traded in and the fact that the motors are filled with water glass and run until the crank seizes up that there will be no more SBC V-8's in bone yards.

Under the law the only parts that can be legally removed from a clunker are the battery, the radiator, the Cat and the tires all of which are to be recycled. The tranny stays in the car, motor is seized solid with a welded crank and the oil passages in the block full of glass. Nothing else (like the high dollar stereo or change in the ash tray can legally be removed and they have to have someone not employed at the dealership or salvage yard witness the fact that the car was shredded totally complete as turned in (except for the battery etc).

This is going to create a tremendous shortage and a slight price hike in parts for V-8 cars and trucks.

you Chevy guys are going to have to start buying and hoarding blocks like we do with Oldsmobiles. fortunately, that program will expire before they stop making V-8 engines so you will still be able to yank the engine out of some of the newer trucks on the lots right now. of course, it wouldnt surprise me to see a bill passed that requires ALL trade ins to be "destroyed". the more i think about it, the more depressing it sounds. i think ill just go home and clean my guns smoking .

Me too hoarding is natural when you think of what is out there now.
2 bolt 400 block
Set of crower 6" 400 stroker rods
KB 128 pistons
2 400 cranks
1 complete assembled 70 LT1 shortblock
Set of 461 heads ready for 2.02 and 1.6 valves
2 Turbo 400s one with a cracked bell housing but good internals and a second core.
1 Turbo 350 core as well as countless 350 internal parts
12 bolt rear end core very clean too.

2 C6ME-A FE shortblocks hidden out back
2 early high nickel 302 blocks, both still std bore, one still a runner
2 C6 trans tucked away too Very Happy
and always hoarding more- I need a few decades worth of supplies here!

I may actually be cashing in on the clunkers deal- shell and a bunch of badly damaged parts made to drive 8 miles to be traded... Walls so scored the fingernail catches on them.

So I have this to ask- how stringent will they likely be on the inspection of these things? I would like to sell off some odds and ends / small detail BS before it goes- just have enough panels to look complete...

If it runs, drives, and drives itself there- besides the title-registration-insurance restrictions- is that all?

I kept trying to make heads or tails of the details, but theres a lot of conflicting BS on the web. I am afraid of the dealer telling me one thing and then getting stiffed...

I don't know how all the yards are handling this, but in ours only the block itself is off limits. Anything else is available.

On a related note......

The special color spray paint they have been hitting the clunker engines with washes off pretty good with brake clean. Wink

It drove me nuts seeing all the later model engines in the yard this year that you wouldn't likely see otherwise.
