I am helping my grandson rebuild a LQ9 motor before he returns home from the middle East. He is in the US Navy. Cyl head numbering I know odd one side even the other but where does it start? Also the heads look identical How do I identify which head goes on which side etc?

just remember #1 is farthest forward

and to my knowlege all chev v-type motors have symetrical heads

#1 is driver side. Heads can go on either side.

I think his head comment was more implying that one bank is cyls 1-3-5-7 and the other bank is cyls 2-4-6-8, i.e. an odd bank and an even bank?

LQ9 was one of my fave truck engines when I was still working- mileage wasnt the greatest but that 2500HD never let me down!
