While Im asking opinions, what is everyone using for racing pistons and connecting rods? I use to use Childs and Albert rods but they are no more. I was looking at MGP rods. Pistons, I used to use Arias but I have found the pin bosses are weak. I am looking a JE's.
I am increasing the power a lot, so I need the best stuff.
Opinions on this???
Thanks

Corey, I can only go by what my Uncle runs.
He runs a 440" Hemi with a 6-71 in AA/S on the West Coast.
JE custom pistons and GRP aluminum rods. The rods get changed every 45 passes. He went almost 47 passes once and made a mess of the KB block.

I looked at the GRP rods as well, I believe GRP and MGP rods are built by Giannone brothers. One owns GRP and the other MGP.

| I ran Manley 6" H-beams & Venolia pistons in my nitrous motor but for my new turbo motor i've opted for a custom piston from JE fitted with Trend tool-steel pins & Oliver Max-series rods. |

Hey Corey,
Not that my stuff matters at your level, but I am using Mahle Pro series pistons for the first time, and I really like them......Nice piece. Oh yeah, and I have a set of Lunati Pro Mod Rods. Take care, can't wait till you get that thing done. _________________ Jake

I'm with lun40119, not that it matters at your level, but I'm running a Scat "H" beam with JE pistons. I have run SRP's in the past and since they are basically JE's, I had good luck with them also. Built it in 1995 before I got married. Now I'm in the poor house with the rest of the married guys. _________________ 2001 Focus 2.0 Zetec

Here is an update for this post (I kind of forgot about it). I decided to go with GRP rods and Arias pistons. I was going to go with JE but my machinist said they had some problems with thin domes on them. As well they say they require some fairly extensive dome moulds in some applications, and it seems they don't even use them when the final pistons are made. I've used Arias for the other motors and they fit very well. Just have to give them the basic smoothing and deburing.

| I just put my prostock engine back together with Bill Miller 500 rods and Arias pistons. The pistons were very heavy compared to the JEs that came out and a lot of profiling had to be done to lighten them. The crank is a hollow Bryant billet, and the pins are taper wall tool steel. The old BME rods had over 80 passes on them! |

I agree with the fact that the Arias are heavy but for a blower application I want the durability over the light weight. Plus, with running a 1.094 x .250 wall pin, the light weight concept went out the window anyway. I guess it boils down to, every piston manufacturer makes a decent piston, but it really depends on what you plan to do with them.

That is different than blown alky with a 6-71 that has 12.5:1 static and will see detonation when you least expect it.
Small blower high static kills the rods from what I have had to work on. |
