Are you saying your distributor gear is stripping out? That could either be excessive oil pump pressure or no end play on the shaft. With the distributor clamped but not overly tightened you should be able to move the shaft up and down slightly. Also, don't over clamp it. Hope you find your gremllins. If you need help, repost. Maybe someone else has some ideas.

Your stall speed seems excessive for your gearing and the fact that your 400 gets most of its scoot at lower rpms. I'm real curious about the effects of changing your converter. Keep us posted.

I agree with osiumfoot. I think that converter will hurt your times. What did desktop dyno / desktop dragstrip predict?

Hi 79 Z28,
You didn't eat a lifter during one race. I'll bet the cam lobe is junk too. Do you have flow numbers for the heads. Use those numbers to select a new cam. Osmiumfoot is right in suggesting you get the combo right before you squeeze it with the bottle. Even a mediocre 406 should run 106-8 mph in the quarter so you are down on horsepower. What kind of fuel pump pressure do you have at the end of the quarter mile.

Since you work at an engine shop, you might consider tearing this whole thing down to the block, jet clean it, rehone and reassemble with new rings and bearings, because if you wiped a lobe you probably have more junk in your oil than you want. Open your oil pump and clean the inside. The plus of doing this is that you might fix a problem you didn't know existed. Gobbling a lifter quite often indicates a terminal illness. Blocked oil passages have been known to be responsible for this symptom. Did you get any noise before the end?

You're not running synthetic oil, are you? I had a customer wipe out a cam lobe last summer, he took it to Crane for warranty, and they advised him NOT to run synthetic. Reason being is that it is TOO slippery, and doesn't allow the cam lobe to rotate the lifter as it comes around.
