i had this trans out to change the clutch. the customer had mentioned that he heard bearing noise so i went ahead and checked it out. i didnt find any issues but it gave me a good opportunity to take pics.

*NOTE* all photos have front of trans facing left.

there are pins in each shaft that you must drive out

remove the rear housing

then the top cover

these wear out and cause hard shifting

pay attention to the shims. dont lose them

this is actually a reassembly pic. when you pull this shaft out, the rollers will most likely fall out

when you pull the gear off in the above pic, this washer will be behind it with a little steel ball. dont lose it.

this is also a reassembly pic. you need to drive out the little roll pin that is sticking out

when you pull the pin, the reverse gear assembly falls apart and ultimately comes out like this

notice there are more short pins than long ones

from left to right (front to back) the rollers and spacers go together as follows: thin spacer, long rollers, long spacer, thick thrust washer over long spacer, short rollers, thin spacer, short rollers, thin spacer.

the next two pics are just for illustration. you CAN NOT install the reverse gear in two pieces. it must be installed as one assembly.

from here, reassemble in reverse procedure

I see why I stick to automatics - they're simpler😀. Thanks for the pictures and tutorial (now I've got to finish my Procharger thread) - I've just never had a reason to really dig into a manual transmission yet. Been into several motorcycle transmissions and I'll say they are simpler than a car transmission. Clay

this one isnt too bad. the 6 speed is a little trickier. you have to stand it up and work on it like an automatic. next chance i get, ill do another thread on that one. i would like to note that, in my 4l60 upgrades thread, i will be doing the same writeup there. im still accumulating parts for that though.

BTW, the second to last pic, you can see the little rollers sticking out. thats actually a disassembly pic. they are NOT supposed to look like that when assembled. im not sure where the pic that belongs there is.
