Free flowing exhaust is always a mpg booster. Definitely worth checking and modifying.

Free flowing exhaust will definitely help, however I want to keep it quiet.

I'm thinking my problem might be the motor itself. It has 125K on it and you still hear a ticking noise at low rpms, sounds like the timing chain slapping.

Any idea how much it would cost for machine work? Block tanked, cleaned, decked, bored, new cam bearing installed. Not sure if the crank would need to be turned, have to wait and see.

I would suspect as much as they would charge you to do an Aluminum LS-x block due to the cast iron sleeves not liking a boring bar or a deck surface.

The question I would ask is just how much gas would you burn at this engines optimal fuel economy (were GM hires an old lady to drive with a car load of her grand kids to determine the EPA estimated mileage because everybody gets worse mileage than posted). Before then subtracting out your current mileage to find the difference in mileage. Knowing the difference in mileage we can calculate how much gas you would have to burn to pay for the rebuilt engine. Now that we can now calculate how long you would have to drive to break even, you have to ask your self do you really want to keep this car that long.

Call around I think you will be surprised that it is not as expensive as you think.
I did an escort motor a while back without boring it just used a deglazing hone and put new rings and bearings in it. The only money I had to spend on machine work was the valve job. I think I got out of it for 1000 or less.

The head should be good, put a new one on last year. I can get a complete overhaul kit, with camshaft for around $500. The machine work on the block shouldn't be too bad. Only question is the crankshaft, if it needs to be turned or not.

Is that a new crank? Or to have it turned with over-sized bearings?

Looks like you are on the right track. Should get out of it for less than $1000 like I said. And you will have a new engine in the car.

I'm looking into a new transmission as well. I found an ad on craigslist with a trans from an 01 with 29K on it for $200.

Anyone know if the transmission is the same from 98 to 01? I think it is but not 100% sure.

This might be too late but it is a neat tool to know about. This is on the pullapart.com site and can come in very handy. I don't know if you have one nearby but the prices are very tough to beat - especially if it's something that can be easily removed. For a junkyard it gets no better than pull a part. Very organized and neat. Formatting is sorta screwy on this but the cars that interchange are still there. Clay

The cars listed below, if equipped with original parts, MAY have the part that you have requested. For more detailed interchange information, ask the Customer Service person at the store.
