I see from the charts that an early big block 396-454 is about 3 inches longer than a 283-350-400 small block. I also understand they fit on the same motor mounts. Is the big block 3 inches longer to the rear of the engine from the motor mount, 3 inches longer to the front of the engine from the motor mounts, or a split of some inches forward and rearward?

I am considering replacing a small block with a early big block and am worried about where I need the extra spacing in the switch. Hoping not to recess the firewall too much.

Any pros out there or any one done this and run into trouble?
Thanks from the new guy.

All GM engines have the rear of the motor and the front of the tranny in the same exact location. So any difference in the length is to the front.

The big block is also 2.5 inches wider than a small block and 1.5 inches taller. All of that extra cast iron adds 235 pounds to the weight over the nose that a small block didn't have, so GM changed the springs up front on a big block car to carry the added weight.
