Thought I'd try to post a video of my Nova at New England Dragway. On this pass I left the line at 2400 rpm. If I try leaving harder I unload the suspension.
The car has gone a best of 11.089 @ 123.16mph. Don't have that run on video. Thought I had an 11.09 run but couldn't find it. I've had a best 60 foot time of 1.48. On this run the incrimentals work out to:
60 ft 1.505
330 ft 4.524
1/8 7.091
1/8 mph 95.54
1000 ft 9.293
1/4 mile 11.143
mph 121.84
Car weighs 3714 with driver & almost full gas tank. Engine dyno = 530 mph at flywheel. 700R4 with 3.06 first gear. 4.11 rear gear, 28 X 8.5 MT street radials (Biggest tire I can fit without changing spring location) 4000 stall converter. 93 octane pump gas. Factory A/C car. That's about it.
Don't mean to bore anyone. Just wanted to see if I could post the video. Friend of mine put it on You Tube so I thought I'd try and put it on SMOKEmUP. |

Are you shifting into overdrive just past the 1000' mark? If so I bet you can most likely get your high 10 with a rear gear change. Switch to a 3.73 which shouldn't hurt your launch much at all and will probably help calm it down and you'll eliminate that last big rpm drop and keep the engine in it's sweet spot longer. If you aren't going into overdrive ignore everything I just said but it sure sounds that way. Clay,
I lock up 3rd gear at 1000 feet. I found I picked up both ET & MPH by doing that. I run a Precision Industries Converter with dual lockup clutches and a stall of 4000 RPM. I can hold the car at 3500 rpm at the line but the tires unload.
I accidently put it in 4th gear once and it fell right on it's face. It also slowed it down if I locked up 3rd gear when it shifted from 2nd.
Dana, at Pro built transmissions in California suggested I try a 3.73 gear. I have noise in the rear gears anyway so I'm figuring I'll give them a try. |

I'll bet that nasty (1.43 ratio change) 2nd gear rpm drop is what is taking out just enough ET to keep it in the 11's. MPH is more than enough.
There is a close ratio 700r4 trans upgrade available that they change out the front set of planetaries. A 9.56 second Vette gained 3/10's to 9.25 in the quarter with the change.
See link. Then go to the bottom of the page. "The Next Big Thing"

Jeep,
I would bet the 3.73 would keep the load on the suspension longer to get out of 1st and on your way.
Then you can play with rear shocks to control things.
I never knew you were running 3.08! 1.50/60 and 3.08 is pretty good even with the 700 lower 1st. |

Woops!!!
Maybe the 3.73 will hold longer before separating the suspension.? |

I can tell you from experience that once you start making good power, most of the time taking some rear gear out is a miracle worker helping a tire limited or nose heavy car hook. Since you have such a low gear in the transmission and aren't leaving with everything the engine has, I can't see how a 3.73 can hurt your 60' and stands a chance of helping.
