No Adam,
I've had the problem with a 406 with an external balanced balancer and now the 408 with an SFI approved internal balanced balancer.
Both engine I checked TDC with the heads off. The 406 might have been off a degree but the 408 was right on the money. I checked the 408 when I made the cam change with the heads on and it was still right on.

I run an older MSD distributor that I added an MSD vacuum advance to. Nothing new to report. Haven't had a chance to get back to it. The distributor worked fine with the dyno box which is a 7AL. I don't know what number MSD coil they use.

Can you take the 6AL out of the loop and see if the timing changes?

SMOKE, I haven't done that but I did try another brand new 6AL with the same results. I took the Timing and Launch controls out of the mix. What I was planning to do next was isolate the wiring to the box.

Have you had a chance to run the Camaro yet? Hope you are well.

"the coil has been repainted so I don't know the number."

-I'm curious as to whether this paint is actually on the plastic around the primary terminal----and around the coil post---and further yet if it might happen to be some metallic paint?

-meaning there could be a possibility of the paint having enough metal pigment in it to be able to read a resistance of the plastic painted surfaces.
------------------------------------------
-one other thing I have seen that messes up the way an engine runs was a broken or cracked magnet in the magnetic trigger.

-I have also seen where if the magnetic trigger has been disassembled--the magnet can be installed upside down and create problems---maybe not the timing issues you are seeing----but problems enough that are hard to find---more like when hooking up the magnetic trigger wires backwards.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I hadn't checked into SMOKEmUP for a few days. Family graduations and other issues have kept me away from the Nova. Hope to get back to it this week.

I got my MSD 6 AL box back last week, hooked it up and now I can time it correctly. The problem must have been in the box all along.
On the dyno it ran best with 38 degrees total so that's where I'm going to start. I also dropped the power valve down to a 2.5 which helps idle quality a lot.

This Sunday is a Nostalgia Event at New England Dragway. Don't expect much in the heat but I'm looking forward to making some passes.

Hope to run into Chip McCallister with the 65 Mustang and see what's up with his spark plug issue.
